If you're in Asbury Park anytime soon, be sure to drop in on the free exhibit of photographs by celebrity photographer Timothy White. It's in a storefront on Asbury's boardwalk (North Beach area near the Paramount/Convention Hall.) We do lead you to hidden doors.
To be honest, I had a tough time warming up to Tim's pictures when I first saw them as tiny images in books or on the 'net. The Asbury exhibit ended that. There are 30 portraits, impressively displayed full size, about 36" by 36", in a pure white room, glassed in and open to light either end.
Subjects include Callista Flockhart, John Travolta, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, James Gandolfini, Whoopie Goldberg, Tom Cruise, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Anne Hathaway, Jack Nicholson and many others ostensibly with a Jersey connection. (The exhibit will eventually end up in the NJ Hall of Fame.)
I always try to learn from good photographers. I'm impressed with how White depicts each of his subjects in different ways, with different backdrops. My imagination runs out so quickly.
If you haven't been to Asbury lately, well go. It's back and funkier than ever. As funky and tolerant as San Francisco, but without the hills and less fog. As artsy as Portland, but with better fried clams and salt water taffy, too. (Sorry, Jake.) As hip as Brooklyn, but more relaxed. Good music all over the boardwalk and even a drum circle every week. (I'm there.)
