The Olympic torch was just lit in an ancient temple with an invocation to Apollo, the sun god -- the first time in months the word "Greece" hasn't been followed by the phrase "and the Euro crisis." Greece: ah, the History. Yes, but the Mythology, too. Bring on the goddesses.
Meet Artemis, sister of Apollo, goddess of the hunt and the moon. Artemis is an athletic, sporting type of girl, who likes being outdoors instead of on stuffy Mt. Olympus. (One internet site bills her as "a super sexy tomboy virgin goddess.") A doubly fitting choice since we had a rare "super moon" this week.
Artemis is often depicted naked, outdoors. But she doesn't like guys who look. Legend says getting caught watching her can be fatal.
I gave my Artemis a sepia tone because turn-of-the-century art books, lacking cheap color printing, used sepia tones to depict her famous Louvre nude painting.
And if you got this far, I'll tie it up by saying: Artemis is identified with the bear. And the bears have been out on Wall Street this week.
